Cardio is half the test
The assessment is a composite out of 100, and 75 passes. The components carry very different weights, and airmen routinely train them as though they do not.
Cardio is 50 points. Waist-to-height is 20. Push-ups and core are 15 each. Write those four numbers down and the training priority argues itself — but almost nobody does, which is why so many airmen split their preparation evenly across four things worth wildly different amounts. Put it in gap terms. An airman sitting at 68 needs seven points. Seven points is roughly a third of the entire push-up component — a large training ask. The same seven points is a much smaller fraction of a 50-point cardio component, and cardio responds faster to focused work than waist circumference does. That is the whole argument.
Choose your events deliberately
Three of the four components offer alternatives, scored on their own tables rather than converted into one another. The same airman can score differently depending on which option they elect, which makes this a real decision rather than a preference.
The run and the HAMR reward genuinely different things — the run is a sustained pace, the HAMR is repeated acceleration and change of direction with a hard cutoff. Neither is universally easier. Key training principles
- Test your alternatives in training, not on the day. Discovering that the HAMR suits you better than the run is worth a lot; discovering it during a scored assessment is worth nothing.
- Two-minute hand-release push-ups are a pacing event. The longer window and the release at the bottom change the problem from strength to sustained output.
- The plank and the sit-up reward different qualities entirely. If your core score is weak, the answer may be a different event rather than more of the same one.
Waist-to-height ratio
Body composition is measured as waist circumference divided by height, both in inches, and it is worth 20 of the 100 composite points. 0.55 is the figure to know — at or below it an airman sits in the low or moderate risk band the standard is built around.
It is also the slowest component to move. Waist circumference responds over months, not weeks, which makes it the wrong thing to attack in a short test cycle and the right thing to work on continuously between them.
Body composition is the one component with no minimum requirement. A high ratio scores zero and nothing more — an airman at 0.61 taking the full 50 for cardio and 15 each for strength and core scores 80 and passes. Exemptions and the composite
Components may be exempted on medical grounds, in which case the composite is calculated on the components that remain. An exemption changes what is scored; it does not change the standard being applied to what is scored.
Testing frequency is set by current policy and by an airman’s most recent score — some high scorers test annually rather than twice a year. Confirm your own interval through your unit rather than assuming it from a previous cycle.

What should I train first for the Air Force PT test?
